Olivia Culpo reveals she underwent surgery for endometriosis this week

"I have been in agony for years around my period and I was misdiagnosed countless times by doctors."

Olivia Culpo underwent surgery for endometriosis Wednesday, she revealed on her Instagram Thursday.

Culpo, 28, told fans she was making the announcement to bring “more awareness” of endometriosis to the public. For her, the condition caused tissue from her uterine lining to “grow in other random parts” of her body and cause pain.

“To top things off it is excruciatingly painful but nearly impossible to see through an ultrasound,” Culpo noted, alongside pictures of herself in the hospital. “I have been in agony for years around my period and I was misdiagnosed countless times by doctors.”

After explaining that doctors often just told her that her ultrasounds were normal and advised her to take Tylenol and rest, Culpo added, “I know a lot of people out there in the Endo community are familiar with these diagnoses which is why I am so passionate about this. Painful periods are not normal!”

“To anyone out there who has endometriosis,” Culpo wrote, “I understand the depression and overall loneliness that can occur with a condition that is so painful yet so hard to be interpreted by other people outside of the body. It’s hard when chronic pain is not validated and you don’t get an answer or understanding.”

“I will continue to spread more awareness around endometriosis so that your symptoms can be validated,” she finished. “You are not alone and you are so strong!”
