One of Joe Douglas’ offseason signings was kicked to the curb on Tuesday.
The Jets released cornerback Pierre Desir after a disappointing nine-game run with the team. Desir led the team with three interceptions, but struggled in coverage and tackling. He had a brutal game last week against the Patriots, giving up a long pass and failing to make a tackle on another.
The Jets signed Desir to a one-year, $3.75 million contract with $3.25 million guaranteed in the offseason. They hoped he could regain the form he showed in 2018 with the Colts. Instead, Desir was benched in his first game against the Bills. Desir regained his starting job two weeks later but had ups and downs. He returned an interception for a touchdown against the Broncos for his highlight as a Jet.
Pro Football Focus has Desir graded as the 105th cornerback out of 120. He allowed a passer rating of 116.5 when targeted, per PFF.
The move clears the way for rookie fifth-round pick Bryce Hall to play more and probably start as the Jets give younger players a look with an eye on 2021.
The Jets also announced that slot cornerback Brian Poole was placed on injured reserve. Poole injured his knee against the Patriots. He will miss at least three games. Arthur Maulet will likely replace Poole in the lineup.
The team also signed TE Connor Davis to the practice squad.
