Michael Hill is the first official known candidate for the Mets’ president of baseball operations vacancy.
An industry source confirmed Wednesday night that Hill, who recently left the Marlins after 19 seasons, has interviewed with team president Sandy Alderson for the Mets’ opening atop their front office. SNY first reported Hill’s interview.
The 49-year-old Hill, a Harvard graduate, had served as Miami’s head of baseball operations since 2013, but was recently squeezed out by team CEO Derek Jeter.
Hill would bring the blend of analytics and old-school scouting savvy to the position that it’s believed Alderson has been seeking.
Alderson noted in a WFAN interview this week the difficulty he’s faced in receiving permission to speak with potential candidates already under contract.
It’s expected Alderson will hire both a president of baseball operations and general manager. Last week, Alderson gutted the Mets’ front office, announcing the departures of general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, assistant general managers Allard Baird and Adam Guttridge and special assistant Omar Minaya.
Alderson has indicated it’s likely Luis Rojas will return as manager, but the new president of baseball operations will have input on the decision.
