The show is over for Omar Hernandez at his private Lower East Side hot spot Omar’s La Boîte.
The members’ dining club quietly reopened last month without his name, sparking buzz the nightlife impresario was ousted.
He told Page Six that he’s still a partner, but that the pandemic made it impossible to provide the “Omar’s experience” with a small outdoor dining space. “The whole concept was: We had a show, people danced and there was dinner. There were live acts and bands … we can’t produce that under these circumstances, so we’re just calling it La Boîte. I’m a host — what I do best is offer the best hospitality,” he said.
The supper club took over the former Happy Ending space and officially opened in January. One of its first previews had been a big Halloween bash that brought out guests including Ellen von Unwerth and Maxwell. Since Mayor de Blasio has extended NYC’s Open Restaurants program until Oct. 31, “We have the street, so it would be a dream to do the biggest social-distancing Halloween block party to show we’re still having fun in New York. It’s a tricky one,” he said.
In the meantime, he’s working on a pop-up in Aspen, Colo. “I’m trying to be proactive … exploring surprise Omar pop-up ideas where a lot of New Yorkers flee for winter. It’s not as dense and there’s more space. Social restrictions are much easier there,” he said.
