Pete Alonso’s struggles at the plate have perhaps seeped into the field.
The slumping Mets first baseman went hitless in four at-bats Monday, but a defensive letdown loomed larger in the team’s 5-3 loss to the Marlins at Citi Field.
After Jacob deGrom had surrendered a homer to Garrett Cooper leading off the sixth, pulling the Marlins within a run, Alonso misplayed Matt Joyce’s grounder behind the bag. That miscue helped the Marlins score three unearned runs in the inning.
“It was a sharply hit ball, hit down the line,” Alonso said. “I feel like I was in the right position, it’s just that the ball took a weird bounce and kicked back to the right. It was a weird, funky hop. It trickled away from me a little bit.
“I feel bad because I know that I was in a good position and did everything I could, but I just didn’t make the play.”
Offensively, Alonso is 2-for-16 (.125) since hitting a home run on Friday to help the Mets win the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees. Overall, he owns a disappointing .719 OPS for the season.
“I feel good and my swing feels good, it’s just a matter of hitting the ball where the fielders aren’t,” Alonso said. “Today I feel like I took some real good swings and I feel like I have taken some real good swings continuously. I just feel like I have been unlucky. I feel like also there’s been missed opportunities where I will foul a couple of pitches off that should have been ripped into gaps or hit hard in play.”
J.D. Davis was absent from the starting lineup, a day after leaving the field with left hip discomfort. The soreness was the residual effect of an Aroldis Chapman fastball Davis had taken to the hip on Saturday, according to general manager Brodie Van Wagenen. Davis will be evaluated before Tuesday’s game in Baltimore. Luis Guillorme started at third base in Davis’ place.
Juan Lagares refused his outright to the Mets’ alternate training site and elected free agency.
Hunter Strickland, whose contract was selected before the game — Drew Smith was optioned to Brooklyn — pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
