Ed Sheeran and wife Cherry Seaborn have welcomed a baby girl named Lyra Antarctica, but the unusual name has some fans shaking their heads, trying to figure out what it means and how to pronounce it.

Their daughter’s first name, Lyra, is Latin for the word “harp,” a perhaps obvious reference to 29-year-old Sheeran’s love of music. Lyra Belacqua also happens to be the name of the main character in Philip Pullman’s popular trilogy “His Dark Materials,” which the singer once described in a tweet as “the best books” he’s ever read.

Lyra is also the name of a constellation which includes one of the brightest stars in the sky, Vega.

The melodic name is pronounced “lye-rah.”

It’s unclear why the couple chose Antarctica for their daughter’s middle name, but Sheeran recently participated in the One Earth charity single to raise awareness for climate change, The Sun reported, which could be why he chose the strong moniker.

Reports surfaced in August that the “Perfect” crooner and Seaborn were expecting their first child together.

The high school sweethearts married in January 2019.
