Ever since Naya Rivera’s death, fans of the late star have wondered how ex-fiancé Big Sean feels about his 2015 hit single “IDFWU” — an abbreviation for “I don’t f–k with you” — which many believed to be written about Rivera following their April 2014 split.
In a new interview with Vulture, the rapper reluctantly addressed the alleged “diss” record, denying he took specific aim at Rivera with the E-40 assisted song.
When asked if he regrets making the track, the 32-year-old explained “That’s a tough question to answer because I’m still processing a lot of that … I don’t feel comfortable talking about it because I want to respect her. She’s made such an impact on people, and she’s done so many great things in her life and her career that it was hurtful to even have that [song] be associated with her.”
“It wasn’t a diss to her,” he claimed during the Q&A. “I truly made the song and played it for her. She knew about it, and she liked it.”
Rivera performed the party-anthem during her 2019 appearance on “Lip Sync Battle.”
“We had a breakup that was very public, and we were young and we forgave each other and moved on from that,” he continued. “If I would have known something this tragic would have happened, I would have never made the song.”
The “Harder Than My Demons” MC also wrote a lengthy dedication to his former partner days after her body was recovered from California’s Lake Piru.
“I appreciate and cherish everything that ever happened between us for making me wiser and a better person,” he wrote. “I’m still grieving and in shock, I can’t believe this is real. I’m praying for you and your family and I know your watching over them and protecting them. Rest In Peace Naya 💙🙏🏾.”
The Grammy-nominated artist is currently dating singer Jhene Aiko.
