“Stranger Things” star Noah Schnapp has denied using the N-word while singing along to the tune “Freaky Friday” in a resurfaced video from last year.
The 15-year-old actor said on his Instagram story Tuesday that he actually said the word “neighbor,” insisting that he has never used the racial slur.
“Hi guys. recently a video from last summer has gotten out of me dancing and singing a song while singing the word ‘neighbor’ over the n word. i would truly never say the n word and i’m not the type of person,” he wrote. “I genuinely have never used that word in my life. using the word ‘neighbor’ in that song was just something my camp friends and i did.”
In the 2019 clip, Schnapp is seen singing the Chris Brown verse in Lil Dicky’s 2018 tune “Freaky Friday,” which uses the N-word repeatedly. The video was posted by one of Schnapp’s friend’s Instagram accounts as the pals reminisced about summer camp last year.
After it began circulating recently, the clip caused the hashtag #NoahSchnappIsOverParty to trend with over 17,000 tweets.
Schnapp also said in his statement, “I hope you all understand i could never even think about doing that. my friends also would never post a video, or support me, if i was saying that slur without hesitation. i apologize for using a replacement word. it is not my place to use one and i should of [sic] kept my mouth shut. i understand why it is found offensive and i am so sorry.”
The comments come a week after Schnapp’s Twitter account was hacked, with the hacker writing of “suicidal thoughts.”
