MLB was forced to postpone games Saturday and Sunday between the Reds and Pirates in Cincinnati after an unidentified Reds player tested positive for the coronavirus a day before, The Post’s Joel Sherman reported.
The development comes as baseball was in the process of recovering from two separate coronavirus outbreaks on the Marlins and Cardinals that disrupted the first few weeks of the 2020 season.
MLB hasn’t had a full schedule of games played since July 26.
The Cardinals were set to play their first game Saturday since July 29 after 18 positive tests between players and staff members derailed their schedule. Outside of the Cardinals and Reds, no teams have recorded a positive coronavirus test since July 30.
Baseball teams are not permitted to disclose the names of players who test positive for coronavirus without the permission of players.
The Reds had COVID-19 issues earlier in the season, with third basemen Mike Moustakas and outfielder Nick Senzel reporting symptoms and spending days on the injured list before negative tests allowed them to return to the field.
Infielder Joey Votto spent one day on the IL before returning and although Matt Davidson tested positive, his follow-up tests were negative and led the team to believe that his first result was a false positive.
The Reds and Pirates now will likely be subjected to increased coronavirus tests, as the two teams faced off Friday in an 8-1 Cincinnati win.
