The Jets were missing one of their top draft picks Friday when they took the field for their first real practice of training camp.

Wide receiver Denzel Mims, the team’s second-round draft pick, injured his hamstring earlier this week and did not practice. The Jets are hoping Mims can be a weapon for quarterback Sam Darnold this season. Depending on how much time he misses, this could stunt his growth in the offense.

“Mentally, we can help him improve,” Jets coach Adam Gase said. “But at the end of the day when you’re playing that spot, it’s all about that chemistry you have with the quarterback. We’re missing time. Since he’s been here he’s tried to do everything right. He shows up early. He tries to make sure that he does all the right things taking care of his body. It was just a really weird step he took and he kind of got stretched out.”

The injury occurred when the Jets were running drills earlier this week and Mims was running routes. There was a low throw and it led to the awkward step, Gase said.

“Every rep we have right now is extremely valuable,” Gase said. “We’ll kind of see how it looks in the big picture of things.”

Running back Frank Gore and cornerback Pierre Desir also missed practice with hamstring injuries. Gase labeled Gore’s absence from practice as “precautionary.” Rookie DL Jabari Zuniga also sat out with quad injury. RB Kenneth Dixon missed practice with a hip flexor.
