Tie this on for size.
Celebrities like Chantel Jeffries, Martha Hunt and Maya Jama are swapping their shirts for something silkier and skimpier this summer, folding and wrapping their favorite scarves around their torsos in lieu of a top.
The easy, breezy, oblique-baring look was made famous back in the early 2000s by pop stars like Beyoncé, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, who often paired their scarf tops with dangerously low-rise jeans and towering platform sandals.
And Bella Hadid — always ahead of the fashion curve — seemed to herald the style’s revival in 2017, when she stepped out in NYC rocking a red dotted hanky.
Now, it’s officially the summer of the scarf, and not just because of face-mask mandates. According to global fashion search platform Lyst, searches for scarves jumped 15 percent during the first week of July alone, while searches for “scarf top,” “bandana top” and “scarf halter top” collectively increased 37 percent month-on-month.
Of course, a knotted silk or cotton square isn’t exactly the most secure stand-in for a shirt, particularly for those with larger chests. To ward off potential wardrobe malfunctions, make like influencer Ellie Delphine and layer a tight-fitting tube top or strapless bra below your scarf.
Ready to take the trend for a spin? Below, shop a handful of scarves large and opaque enough to double as tops — and pretty enough to style in other ways, should you have (entirely understandable) second thoughts post-purchase.
