The iconic “Into the Wild” bus is set to be relocated — to a place a little closer to civilization.
The Alaska Department of Natural Resources said in a statement on Thursday that the bus will most likely be housed in the University of Alaska-Fairbanks’ Museum of the North.
The bus, which made its debut in the 1996 Jon Krakauer novel and subsequent film, was once an icon for many trailblazers who wished to visit the bus in the wild. The subject of the book, Christopher McCandless, died of starvation while living temporarily in the remotely located vehicle.
However, after an average of roughly 15 rescue missions every year, and two confirmed deaths, the bus was removed from it original location outside the Denali National Park and Preserve and relocated to what authorities called a “secure but undisclosed location.”
“I know it’s the right thing for public safety in the area, removing the perilous attraction,” said Mayor Clay Walker.
“At the same time, it’s always a little bittersweet when a piece of your history gets pulled out.”
