Ellen DeGeneres’ apology had poor timing.
Fans and media waited to see if and when DeGeneres, 62, would address the alleged “toxic” work environment that is her eponymous daytime talk show, and they finally received it on Thursday. Unfortunately, it arrived only hours before 36 former employees accused “Ellen Show” executives of sexual misconduct.
In light of the latest accusations, it’s unclear what the future holds for the show, but before the bombshell report executive producer Andy Lassner assured one fan, “Nobody is going off the air,” following DeGeneres’ apology.
However, her attempt at atonement has received mixed reviews. Many noticed the “Finding Nemo” voice actress appeared to place the blame on her staff instead of owning up to her own tacit involvement.
“Everybody Loves Raymond” star Brad Garrett called out DeGeneres for her actions—or lack thereof.
“Sorry but it comes from the top @TheEllenShow,” he tweeted, tagging DeGeneres. “Know more than one who were treated horribly by her. Common knowledge.”
Garrett appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” six times between 2004 and 2007.
Others came forward and also agreed with Garrett’s take, with one Twitter user writing, “wasn’t even an apology! she shifted the blame entirely and threw her staff under the bus when it was ellen they were complaining about.”
“I think the biggest issue w/ this apology is that she shifted the blame on to her staff. I honestly think that get ego is sooo big that is physically incapable of admitting any wrongdoing, at least not until her back is up against the wall and is cornered…” wrote another. “1. Mariah knew: when Ellen forced her to drink on the show, therefore admitting she was pregnant and ultimately announcing VERY PUBLICLY she had a miscarriage. 2. Dakota Johnson knew when she kept interrupting her mid convo.”
Of course, DeGeneres also has her defenders.
Manager-to-the-stars Scooter Braun came out in support of DeGeneres, making him the only celebrity to come to her aid as of late.
“People love to take shots at people. They love to see people fall. How quickly so many forget.
@TheEllenShow is a kind, thoughtful, courageous human being who stands for what is right and highlights on her show the best of us. She has helped change the views for equality…” he tweeted.
“Needed to say this as I know first hand how she helps so many when we are watching and when we are not. She isn’t about what is popular she is about what is right. Sending love to Ellen today.”
Braun’s clients Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande have both appeared on DeGeneres’ show numerous times over the years.
A Twitter user said the uproar was “silly,” adding that DeGeneres shouldn’t be blamed for her staff’s quality of life.
“This is silly. @TheEllenShow has thousands of employees. She doesn’t have time to make sure every employee is happy. They’re there to do a job,” he wrote.
“@TheEllenShow became a national treasure because of her transparency,” wrote another. “This is a better time than any to be transparent.”
DeGeneres hasn’t acknowledged the sexual misconduct allegation her producers are now facing. Despite her apology, the question remains: Will she be canceled?
