West Hollywood, Calif., community leaders are warning Chateau Marmont not to “retaliate” against laid-off staff who protest because the famed hotel hasn’t provided them with health care during the pandemic.

We’re told that on Thursday, 300 community members — including 32 clergy members and candidates for West Hollywood city council — sent a letter to the hot spot’s owner, André Balazs, reading in part, “We are outraged that Chateau Marmont is not providing ongoing affordable health insurance coverage to workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

They add, “We are watching the hotel’s conduct and will not tolerate any attempt to retaliate against workers who are speaking out about their treatment at the Chateau Marmont.”

Nearly all of the legendary hotel’s 242 employees were let go in March without insurance or severance after the lockdown began. In May, Balazs donated $100,000 to a GoFundMe that raised $300,000. He split that money among the former employees. The hotel reopened in May and said it would rehire staff based on “guest volume.”
