Aubrey O’Day says she has a ‘hard time believing’ Britney Spears is being held captive

Aubrey O’Day is taking issue with the #FreeBritney movement, the fan-led conspiracy theory that claims Britney Spears is trapped in a conservatorship against her will. Aubrey O’Day is taking issue with the #FreeBritney movement, the fan-led conspiracy theory that claims Britney Spears is trapped in a conservatorship against her will.

O’Day, 36, tweeted on Thursday, “I’m having a hard time believing Britney’s dad has her held prisoner in front of random yellow walls making her talk nonsense w retainers in like the last video she posted. is there no possibility that she is sincerely sick & this movement is fans that can’t come to terms w that?”

The Danity Kane singer was referencing a video Spears, 38, posted on Instagram on Thursday, in which she answered questions like what is her favorite Disney movie, while standing in front of a yellow backdrop.

“Answering some more of your questions,” the “Toxic” singer captioned the clip. “Ps if I sound like I have a lisp it’s because I just got a retainer 😜💋👄 !!!!”

In response to O’Day’s tweet, one Spears super-fan wrote, “Having mental health issues does not warrant someone being stripped of their human rights jfc. The way y’all are actually further stigmatizing mental illness by assuming that it’s ok for people like her to have their freedom stripped from them says quite a lot about you, not her.”

In response to some of the criticism, O’Day clarified in a series of tweets that she recognized the damaging role the music industry can play on an artist’s mental health.

“I was in a group with a few artists who admit they weren’t built for this industry, and much of it hurt them deeply,” she tweeted. “I just think turning her obvious mental health issues into a conspiracy prison isn’t helping her or others in this place.

However, others agreed with the former “Making the Band” star that fans don’t know what is really going on behind-the-scenes.

I believe two things can be true here,” one person said. “I believe her situation may have some corruption (on the lawyers/management side), however I do believe that we don’t know enough about her mental health (nor have the right to know) to have a true understanding.”

Spears’ older brother Bryan broke his silence this week, and helped shed light on his sister’s situation. “It’s very frustrating to have,” he said of the conservatorship on the “As Not Seen on TV” podcast. “Whether someone’s coming in peace to help or coming in with an attitude, having someone constantly tell you to do something has got to be frustrating.”

However, the 43-year-old added that his family is in agreement that they “made the right choice.”

Spears has been in a conservatorship under her father, Jamie Spears, since 2008. He stepped away last September due to health reasons, but Jodi Pais Montgomery is currently serving as Spears’ conservator until Aug. 22.

The pop star’s mom, Lynne Spears, filed legal documents last week petitioning to be included in all future conservatorship decisions.
