Megyn Kelly shaded NBC with a scathing tweet this week, amid the network’s decision to pull episodes of “30 Rock” that featured characters in blackface.
“Wait – what network aired those episodes again?” The 49-year-old political pundit sarcastically asked in a tweet Wednesday.
Kelly’s NBC project “Megyn Kelly Today” was ended by the network in October 2018, after she defended wearing blackface as part of a Halloween costume while talking about “Real Housewives of New York City” star Luann de Lesseps’ decision to dress up as singer Diana Ross.
“When I was a kid, that was okay as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character,” she said.
It caused an immediate uproar. The show was axed three days later and her contract was terminated in January of the following year.
Her dig comes after “30 Rock” creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock along with NBCUniversal requested that streaming services remove four episodes from the long-running sitcom that feature white actors in blackface.
Fey asked for their removal in a letter that was obtained by Variety.
“As we strive to do the work and do better in regards to race in America, we believe that these episodes featuring actors in race-changing makeup are best taken out of circulation,” she wrote.
“I understand now that ‘intent’ is not a free pass for white people to use these images. I apologize for pain they have caused.
Going forward, no comedy-loving kid needs to stumble on these tropes and be stung by their ugliness. I thank NBCUniversal for honoring this request,” she ended.
In one episode, Jane Krakowski — who played narcissist Jenna Maroney — wore blackface to dress as former Pittsburgh Steelers star Lynn Swann. In another episode Jon Hamm darkened his skin while spoofing the radio show “Amos ’n’ Andy” and Disney’s “Song of the South.”
