Madison Beer apologized Tuesday over comments she made about the 1955 book “Lolita,” telling her 2.8 million Twitter followers she “misspoke and would never condone inappropriate [sic] relationships of any kind.”
The 21-year-old pop star came under fire on Monday after being asked about Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial novel, which follows a man’s obsession with a 12-year-old girl named Dolores Haze.
“I said I romanticize it because to me it’s about a taboo relationship, not about the age. That’s just how it reads to me,” Beer said in since-deleted messages, according to Newsweek. “The movie has a much different take and I just liked the storyline. I’d never condone pedophilia y’all… it’s a fake story and a made-up book.”
The hashtag, “#MadisonBeerIsOverParty,” became a trending topic on Twitter, with Beer issuing an apology in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
“i love u guys & i’m sorry. i misspoke and would never condone inappropriate [sic] relationships of any kind. i’m sincerely sorry for it seeming like i do. let me make it clear – i do not. have a good night,” she tweeted.
Beer also responded to a fan who wrote, “Just be careful w what u say uk, u gotta think even longer before u speak bc of the platform u have.”
“Yes and i need to b mindful of other people’s experiences and i apologize sincerely,” the singer replied. “i’d never want to hurt anyone.”
Beer is no stranger to controversy, recently denying claims she staged a photo op during a Black Lives Matter protest in Los Angeles.
“the photoshoot rumors are wildly untrue. i have been protesting for days. this is not and never was a photo op it is me standing with a movement and getting out there to spread a message i believe in. that is all,” Beer tweeted earlier in the month.
