With MLB’s amateur draft cut to just five rounds this season, there was added importance placed on signing free agents, which teams could begin to do Sunday — for no more than $20,000.
The Yankees added to their minor league depth by signing right-hander Carson Coleman out of the University of Kentucky.
Coleman, 21, was previously drafted by the Rays in the 33rd round last year, but he opted to go back to school for his redshirt junior season.
In an abbreviated college season, Coleman struck out 13 batters in 5 ²/₃ innings.
He fanned 81 batters in 53 ²/₃ innings as a Wildcat and also pitched in the Cape Cod league last summer, which scouting director Damon Oppenheimer said last week was a significant factor in looking at players — especially in a year in which much of the spring season was shortened or canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
With baseball still at a standstill as the league and the MLBPA haggle over dollars, there’s no telling when Coleman or any of the three players the Yankees picked last week will actually start playing.
