Damian Lillard was nearly a Knick. At least, that’s what the Trail Blazers All-Star point guard believes.

“I thought I was headed there a few years ago; I was hearing trade rumors,” Lillard said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “The Garden is my favorite place to play.”

It’s unclear when exactly he was referring to, but missing out on the 29-year-old Lillard wouldn’t be the first time the Knicks failed to land a star point guard. They nearly traded for Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry in 2013. In 2018, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said that if Lillard didn’t stay in Portland, his two preferred destinations were the Knicks and Lakers.

The Knicks obviously wouldn’t be in the market for a point guard if that deal went down. Lillard is a five-time All-Star and four-time All-NBA selection. Lillard is under contract through the 2024-25 season and the Knicks remain desperately in need of a floor general.
