A Mets win in the 2000 World Series could have been Derek Jeter’s ticket out of New York City.
The Yankees ended up winning the Subway Series in five games, with Jeter winning the MVP after batting .409 with a pair of home runs, but had it played out differently, the shortstop may have been looking for a new neighborhood to call home.
“I’ve joked about it before, but I really mean it – I moved to Manhattan when I was 21 years old, but if we didn’t win that World Series against the Mets, I think I would’ve moved out of the city,” Jeter recently told YES Network’s Jack Curry on “YES We’re Here.”
“In my mind, it was a battle for New York, and we were playing for something pretty special, winning three championships in a row.”
The Yankees had won the World Series in 1998 and 1999, beating the Padres and Braves, but the 2000 October classic came with a different kind of pressure — beyond just becoming the fourth team to three-peat in MLB history.
The Mets had won Game 3 to cut the Yankees’ series lead to 2-1 before Jeter led off Game 4 at Shea Stadium with a first-pitch home run off Bobby Jones, stealing the momentum back and sending the Yankees on their way.
“The Mets had a great team, and all eyes were on New York. We had to win,” Jeter said. “I felt as though we had everything to lose. I hate it when a team says, ‘well, we have nothing to lose,’ because you have a World Series to lose. But, I think for us it was a little bit more than that, so thank God we were able to win that series.”
