It’s typically sunny days on “Sesame Street,” but the long-running PBS program will take on a serious theme this Saturday.
“Sesame Street” and CNN will host a 60-minute town hall special for children and families at 10 a.m. to discuss racism.
Called “Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism,” and airing in response to the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd at the hands of police and the subsequent protests, the show aims to talk to children about prejudice and demonstrations — and teach lessons about embracing diversity and being more empathetic toward others.
The special will feature Big Bird and CNN’s Van Jones and Erica Hill as moderators. “Sesame Street” characters including Elmo, Abby Cadabby and Rosita will join them to answer families’ submitted questions.
“Sesame Street” is no stranger to addressing current events and promoting inclusion. Sesame Workshop, the educational non-profit behind “Sesame Street,” launched several animated public-service spots in March to keep children safe at the outset of America’s coronavirus outbreak.
In 2019, they introduced a new character, Karli, described as a “young Muppet in foster care.” In 2017, a character with autism named Julia premiered on the show.
The town hall special will air on CNN, CNN International and the Spanish-language CNN en Español. It will also appear live on the CNN.com homepage and CNN mobile apps for those without a cable subscription.
