You ask, we answer. The Post is fielding questions from readers about New York’s biggest pro sports teams and getting our beat writers to answer them in a series of regularly published mailbags. In today’s installment: the Jets.

As much as I don’t want to see (Jamal) Adams go, what if the Jets can get Dallas to give them a 1st and a 3rd and (WR Michael) Gallup? — Edwin

Jamal Adams trade talk is popular these days, but I don’t see the Jets trading Adams any time soon. Could things change if the contract standoff gets ugly during training camp? Yes. But I don’t think he will be traded before August and I think the trade deadline is an even more realistic time to point to.

The Jets are still hopeful to extend Adams. They just want to do it on their timeline, which sounds like 2021. If things get really ugly and Adams demands a trade or irks management with a holdout, then I think the trade you propose is something the Jets should do. I doubt the Cowboys would give that much up, though. Gallup would walk in as the best receiver on the Jets. I think it is more likely that the Jets would get the first and the third and not the player also.

If the Jets extend Jamal Adams now, it would serve two purposes. 1) You keep your best player happy and on the team. 2) You will pay him less with an extension now as opposed to a year or two. Doesn’t it make more sense (economically) to give Adams his extension now rather than wait? — Christopher S. Davidson

1. I don’t think you worry about keeping people happy in the NFL. The Jets have to make the best decision for the team long term.

2. I don’t see the safety market getting out of control in the next year or two. This is not the quarterback position. Minkah Fitzpatrick and Derwin James could be in line for extensions next year, but I don’t think the Jets need to worry about the market getting crazy.

I actually am glad the Jets signed Joe Flacco, but why didn’t they sign Cam Newton, who could have competed with Sam Darnold for the starting quarterback job, been a better mentor to Darnold and given the Jets a better chance to win compared to Flacco? — Matthew Marciano

Matthew, I understand the question and the interest in Newton. I have not spoken to Newton or his representatives, but I wonder if he is at a point where he is ready to be a backup. You talk about competition for Darnold. That is not where the Jets are right now. Darnold is their guy. They are not looking for competition for him. They were looking for a solid veteran to come in and help Darnold out and also give them a competent replacement if Darnold gets injured. Flacco is at a place in his career where he seems ready to accept that role. I doubt Newton is there yet.

There is also the question of cost. Flacco signed a one-year, $1.5 million with incentives if he plays. Is Newton signing that kind of deal?

Overall, Flacco makes more sense for the Jets right now.

I thought Darnold could be a savior coming out of USC but now I’m worried. In today’s NFL it doesn’t take this long for quarterbacks to develop. Should the Jets look to move on after this season if he regresses? — Sean Liggins

Darnold does not turn 23 until next week. He is younger than Joe Burrow. Give him some time. He entered one of the worst situations possible with the Jets between the roster and then a coaching change after his first season. It feels like they are on the right path now, but it will take some time to build around him.

I have seen enough glimpses of greatness from Darnold to believe he will put it all together at some point and be a very good quarterback. I don’t think you give up on him after this season even if his play does not make a major leap. However, I would consider bringing competition in for him next year like the Bears are doing with Mitch Trubisky and Nick Foles. I think that is fair.

What is going on with Quinnen Williams and that stupid gun charge a few months back? Last year we had to deal with (Chris) Herndon’s suspension, now do we have to deal with a 4 game suspension for Williams? — PJ

Williams’ case is still delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic closing the courts until it is deemed safe again. I don’t think you have to worry about a suspension this year. This will have to play out in the courts for a while before the NFL weighs in. It will be something to watch in 2021 probably.
