“Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino has signed on to take over an upcoming “Scarface” remake, Variety reports.
There are already two versions of the gangster classic: the first, from 1932 starring Paul Muni and directed by Howard Hawks (“The Big Sleep”), and the second is the notorious 1983 production starring Al Pacino that’s directed by Brian De Palma (“Mission: Impossible”).
Filling the director’s chair in the latest remake has been a complicated journey. The Italian filmmaker is the last of four directors who unsuccessfully took on the remake, beginning in 2011, with producer Martin Bregman, who commissioned De Palma’s “Scarface.” His first choice was David Yates (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”) to direct the new script written by David Ayer (“Suicide Squad”).
Then, in 2014, news broke that Chilean director Pablo Larraín (“No”) would replace Yates — with a different script by Paul Attanasio (“Donnie Brasco”) that followed “a Mexican hustler in Los Angeles.”
Later reports revealed that director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) and writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (“Miss Bala”) were tied to the film, just before Bregman’s death in June 2018. Later, after Fuqua’s stint, a script by the Coen brothers (“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”) was pegged to the project, who chose Diego Luna (“Narcos: Mexico”) for the lead role.
That leaves Guadagnino with the Coens’ script, and producer Dylan Clark (“The Batman”) to take over for Bregman. Further details, including cast list, have not been announced.
Guadagnino most recently led a remake of art-thriller “Suspiria” for Amazon Studios, which starred Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton and Chloë Grace Moretz.
