As American movie fans have been turning to drive-ins as a way to see films while social distancing, Tribeca Film Festival co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal are launching a drive-in movie series this summer.

Called “Tribeca Drive-In,” the Tribeca Enterprises series will kick off June 25 as a partnership with IMAX and AT&T to show indie and classic films, as well as music and sports events nationwide.

A schedule has yet to be released.

“It’s in our DNA to bring people together through the arts,” Rosenthal said of the plan as part of a statement.

The initiative will also aim to boost local businesses surrounding the screenings.

This year’s Tribeca Film Festival was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the fest is still putting on an “At Home” version of its Tribeca Talks series of panels via Facebook.

De Niro and Rosenthal began Tribeca Enterprises in 2003, which has grown to include the NYC film fest, as well as a TV festival, and the famed Tribeca Studios production company.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, drive-in ticket sales in the US have been “steady, but not spectacular.” But drive-ins are apparently booming these days in international territories such as Germany and South Korea.
