At least one scout is urging baseball fans not to sleep on this lesser-known Yankees pitching prospect.
Baseball America magazine published an article Wednesday with insight from a scout on Yankees right-hander Yoendrys Gomez, who the organization signed out of Venezuela in 2016 for $50,000.
“From a scouting perspective, this is a guy you can dream on,” the scout said of Gomez.
The last three seasons have seen the 20-year-old’s velocity jump as he has filled out his 6-foot-4 frame.
“Gomez’s fastball is electric if you catch him on the right day,” the scout said. “He throws it between 92-97 mph with hard bore to the arm side. … The pitch can really jam up right-handers and run it away from left-handers. Has control more than command and still needs to be more consistent. He will amp up his effort when he falls behind in counts or gets into tougher situations, which will cause some scattered mistakes.”
Gomez combined for a 3.99 ERA between Low-Class A Charleston and the Pulaski rookie league Yankees last season. He allowed three homers in 12 starts, while registering 53 strikeouts.
“He has big velocity, shows you two plus secondary pitches all on a young, projectable build with a starter’s look to the arm action and delivery. It will all come down to being consistent.”
Gomez may be prone to getting “lost in the shuffle of some of their bigger-named prospects,” according to the scout, but he still has a “chance to be really good.”
The scout also said he thinks Gomez is “a guy who, when it clicks, is going to fly through their system like Deivi Garcia,” one of the Yankees’ most highly touted pitching prospects.
Noting that Gomez will gain strength and throw harder as he matures, the scout believes he has the right stuff to be an effective major-league pitcher at some point.
