It wasn’t exactly the Thrilla in Manila.
But still, Saturday night’s Instagram battle between ’90s R&B giants Babyface and Teddy Riley was much anticipated — even as the mega all-star “One World: Together at Home” benefit played on.
But due to technical difficulties, the showdown had to be rescheduled for tonight — and the battle is on.
The two producers, who were behind hits such as Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time” (Riley) and Whitney Houston’s “I’m Your Baby Tonight” (Babyface), are now set to face off beat versus beat tonight at 8 p.m. EDT on Instagram Live. To watch the battle, download the Instagram app on your phone and stream the hits throwdown for ’90s R&B supremacy.
Although both Babyface, 62, and Riley, 52, were artists — the former as a solo singer, the latter as a member of the R&B group Guy — it is their work as producers that has truly stood the test of time.
Riley, the architect of the new jack swing sound in the ’90s, produced hits for Mary. J. Blige, Blackstreet and even Lady Gaga. Meanwhile, Babyface — with and without his producing partner L.A. Reid — built hits for everyone from TLC to Madonna.
May the best beatmaster win.
