Things are starting to get heated in the Taiwan baseball league.

Some fans looking for their sports fix have tuned in to the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL), which restarted last week with robots and cardboard cutouts in the stands amid the coronavirus outbreak. And anyone watching Sunday’s Rakuten Monkeys-Fubon Guardians game on Eleven Sports — which streams Monkeys games on Twitter with English commentary — witnessed the benches clear after Guardians pitcher Henry Sosa drilled Monkeys infielder Kuo Yen-Wen.

Sosa, a 34-year-old right-hander who made 10 starts for the Astros in 2011, kept throwing far inside to Kuo in the bottom of the fourth inning before finally hitting him on the buttocks. Tempers quickly flared as both dugouts emptied for some pushing and shoving.

Henry Sosa of the Fubon Guardians argues with Rakuten Monkeys pitcher Yu Hsun Chen.

Benches cleared during the Rakuten Monkeys-Gubon Guardians baseball game Sunday in Taiwan.

“For our international viewers, you need to understand that this never really happens in the CPBL,” one of the announcers advised. “It’s usually a very conservative league. They don’t even argue balls and strikes or outs very often. For this to happen right now, can I say it’s quite exciting?”

Quite exciting, indeed.
