While broadcasting from home during the coronavirus pandemic, BBC weatherman Owain Wyn Evans signed off his forecast with a cheery tip for viewers to “stay safe” — then raced off-camera to a nearby drum set, where he banged out percussion for his show’s theme song as it closed the broadcast.
The 36-year-old Welsh presenter, a self-described “unapologetically flamboyant” weatherman, rocked out on the skins and cymbals while still rocking his camera-ready three-piece suit, tie, pocket square and a glittery brooch. A video of his broadcast beats — posted to Twitter early Wednesday — topped 2.5 million views, more than 24,600 retweets and 104,600. The video also nabbed more than 8,200 views on Instagram.
His energetic display delighted viewers, with one suggesting that the network “replace the usual music with your performance permanently. That was fantastic!” and another adding, “We’re all going a bit mad, so this is just what the doctor ordered.”
It turns out Evans, who joined the show “BBC North West Tonight” in September 2019, has some mad drum skills beyond his show’s theme. On his YouTube channel, he can be seen keeping the beat to songs by Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears and more. The consummate showman is also apparently a “RuPaul’s Drag Race” fan: For International Drag Day in 2017, he clacked a handheld fan and threw some shade about shade during a forecast. That same year he even presented a weather forecast in nine different languages as a salute to International Mother Language Day.
