The coronavirus pandemic is leading to a lot of self-evaluation. For former NFL running back Chris Johnson, it led him to vent about one poor decision — signing with the Jets six years ago.
In a series of tweets, the retired Johnson agonized over that decision, writing that he should’ve signed with the Ravens instead. Johnson said the money was the same at both places – he was given a three-year, $9 million contract by the Jets. After running for at least 1,000 yards in his first six seasons in the league — all with the Titans — he amassed just 663 yards in 2014 with the Jets and was released with two years left on a three-year contract. The team struggled, going 4-12 in the final season under Rex Ryan.
“Just thinking to myself how did I pick going to jets over Baltimore Ravens in 2014 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ what a bad decision !!!!” Johnson wrote.
Johnson responded to a few tweets about it, too, saying he would have preferred to stay with the Titans his entire career if he could, and writing that it was nothing against the Jets, but Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell were already there, and he wasn’t needed.
As the responses piled up from his 900,000 followers, Johnson remarked: “Shheeshhhh that struck a nerve lol.”
After leaving the Jets, Johnson played parts of three more seasons with the Cardinals but never found the form that made him a three-time Pro Bowler in his time in Tennessee.
