As COVID-19 continues to spread, the CFDA has announced that its annual award show — often called the “Oscars of fashion” and originally scheduled for June 8 — will be pushed to a later date.
“After carefully reviewing the guidelines of federal and state governments, as well as public health agencies, CFDA Chairman, Tom Ford, and Steven Kolb, President and CEO, along with the full support of the board, have made the decision to postpone the 2020 CFDA Fashion Awards,” the organization shared in a statement Wednesday morning, adding that designer nominations will be postponed as well.
“The COVID-19 outbreak is bringing many challenges to fashion designers in both their personal lives and professional operations,” the statement continued. “As an organization with a diverse membership conducting business globally, the CFDA is doing everything it can to help our designers through these difficult times in their businesses.”
Known for its star-studded red carpet graced by celebrities and designers alike, the CFDA Fashion Awards honor the year’s top achievements in womenswear, menswear, accessory design and more.
It also bestows the Fashion Icon Award on a stylish star each year; past recipients include Rihanna (2014), Beyoncé (2016) and Jennifer Lopez (2019).
