Experts don't know who a mysterious woman was who was recently seen with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. This has led to rumors that she is Kim Jong Un's loyal half-sister, according to reports on Wednesday.
The possible "assistant," who is often photographed wearing a dark suit dress and holding a handbag, was seen behind the Supreme Leader at an outdoor concert last week and at several other events in recent months, according to the Guardian.
She was also seen with folders at a speech the dictator gave to the country's parliament on Sept. 8, in which he promised to never give up nuclear weapons.
The woman who follows the dictator was first noticed by watchdogs in February. They think she is a family member, possibly Kim's older half-sister.
She might be Kim Jong Un's mysterious half-sister, Kim Sol Song, who is said to have stayed involved in the party's leadership behind the scenes, according to NK News, a website based in the US that closely follows the country. The article was published in April.
“The new assistant has been seen hovering close to Kim holding a large handbag during four of his public appearances this month, and she was seen handing [Kim] his speech at a large party event at the end of February.”
The outlet says that Kim Sol-song is probably in her 30s or 40s and that she has "remained active in the party's leadership behind the scenes."
North Korea's tightly controlled state media have been showing pictures and videos of a woman standing next to Kim for months, but they still don't know who she is.
Kim Yo-jong, the 34-year-old sister of the supreme leader, has become one of the most important people in the North Korean government in recent years.
Many people think of her as the country's top propagandist, and she often travels abroad to represent her powerful brother.
Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korea Studies in Seoul, said in 2018 that she is one of the few people who can talk freely with Kim.
This year, the dictator also chose Choe Son-hui, 57, to be the country's first woman foreign minister.
