Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, said that his country is ready to use nuclear weapons against the US and South Korea if there is a military conflict between them.
State media reported on Kim's angry speech to war veterans on the 69th anniversary of the end of the 1950–53 Korean War. In his speech, he made threats against both countries and was very angry. Kim made these comments as he tries to bring together a country whose economy has been hurt by a pandemic.
According to the official Korean Central News Agency, Kim said, "Our armed forces are fully ready to handle any crisis, and our country's nuclear war deterrent is also ready to mobilize its full power quickly, precisely, and in accordance with its mission."
He criticized the US for "demonizing" North Korea and said that US-South Korea military drills show that the US has "double standards" and is "gangster-like" because it accuses North Korea of provocation when Kim orders normal military activities, which seems to be a reference to its missile tests.
Recently, officials in Seoul and Washington said that Pyongyang was ready to do its first nuclear test since 2017.
Kim also called the new South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol, a "confrontation maniac" whose conservative government is run by "gangsters."
Since he became president in May, Yoon's government has done a lot to strengthen Seoul's military alliance with the US and make it easier to deal with nuclear threats from North Korea.
Kim said that talking about using military force against North Korea was "ridiculous" and "very dangerous and suicidal." He then bragged that he had "absolute weapons that they fear the most."
“Such a dangerous attempt will be immediately punished by our powerful strength and the Yoon Suk Yeol government and his military will be annihilated,” he said.
In April, Kim also said that if his country was threatened, he could use nuclear weapons to strike first. He said that his country would "never be limited to the single mission of war deterrent."
North Korea won't talk to the US and South Korea until they stop doing things that hurt the North, like putting sanctions on it and doing military drills.
Last week, South Korea's Defense Ministry said that South Korea and the US would take part in military drills this summer. For the first time since 2018, these drills would include training on the ground.
In the past few years, the militaries of the countries that are allies have cut back on or canceled drills because of COVID-19. They did this in the hopes that it would help them talk to the North Korean dictator in a better way.
