UFO or drone sighting? Strange lights captured in the skies of Texas

Strange lights were seen north of Austin on Thursday night over Brushy Creek and Cat Hallow.

Gus McGiven shared video to FOX 7. He was out walking with his friend Kyle Gomez in Round Rock near Cat Hallow.

"When you see it in real life, it's a lot brighter than it truly is," Kyle Gomez remarked.

Emily White claims she was with a companion along Brushy Creek, near Cedar Park, at the time. They also captured a video of the lights.

"It was truly captivating." It was so quiet that if there had been just one light, I may have assumed, 'Oh, a helicopter, a plane, anything like that.' But there were a lot of them," White explained.

FOX 7 questioned White if she was concerned about a close encounter.

"I'll be kind of honest. I'm not sure whether I believe all of that, but I'm not sure. Maybe, but I hear a lot of it happening in places like America. I guess it's just because it didn't make any noise at all, which I thought was strange. But, yeah, definitely felt like an alien invasion or something was on the way," White said.

Gus McGiven and Kyle Gomez were also questioned.

"I've never believed in UFOs or anything like that, but I might now." "I'm not sure, I'm not sure," McGiven remarked.

UAVs, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, could have been the "UFOs."

"I'd have to say there's nothing otherworldly about this." But that's not to say it couldn't happen," said drone expert Gene Robinson.

Robinson, who lives in Wimberley, trains and flies many sorts of UAV platforms. He went over the video that was given to FOX 7.

"My initial thoughts are that it is very likely a drone-based phenomenon," Robinson said.

The lights in one video clip zoomed out at one point. Some people believe that whatever was in the air was emitted by a laser. However, Robinson remarked that there didn't appear to be anything for a laser to reflect off of.

"That's quite unlikely." "I'm still thinking this is someone testing their do-it-yourself drone swarm," Robinson added.

A drone swarm is a spectacular light show. They first took to the skies roughly two years ago. Drone swarms, such as those seen over Shanghai in 2020, can cover the sky. Galveston has one for a 4th of July celebration. A drone swarm created quite a stir at SXSW in March.

"Pretty much expect this to be the future of night light shows, in that these drones will be swarming in, as we've seen 100, 200, 300 drones," Robinson said.

Gus and Kyle think they observed UAVs while watching the SkyFOX Drone fly Friday afternoon, but they aren't completely dismissing the UFO theory.

"It was truly captivating." "It was very quiet," White remarked.

To fly at night, especially in a swarm arrangement, the FAA requires a waiver. According to agency officials, they are investigating whether a waiver was given.

According to Round Rock police, no calls were received regarding the lights.
