Fox News has learned that Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, went to a fundraiser retreat in Wyoming that Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy hosted just hours before Liz Cheney lost her primary on Tuesday.
The event took place at a resort in Teton Village, near Jackson Hole, on the same day that Cheney, a longtime Republican representative, lost his seat to Harriet Hageman, who was backed by Trump.
A source told Fox News that McCarthy and Musk ran a fireside chat with supporters, House members, and Republican candidates.
The press was not allowed to attend.
Business Insider said that the National Republican Congressional Committee fundraising event took place "practically in Cheney's backyard."
Musk has become more political on Twitter and joined the Republican Party in the past few months, so this event comes at a good time. Musk is in court right now because of his $44 billion deal to buy the social media giant.
McCarthy would neither confirm nor deny that Musk would be at the event. The Republican leader made it clear that "members, donors, and candidates" could all go to the event.
Musk and McCarthy have a special relationship because SpaceX is based in Bakersfield, California, which is in McCarthy's district.
Musk has given money to both parties and said he has voted for Democrats in the past. Musk said earlier this year that he had voted for the first time ever for a Republican candidate. He said that he voted for Mayra Flores, who won the special election for the 34th Congressional District in Texas.
Musk has also said that there will be a big red wave in 2022 and hinted that he might vote for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for president if he runs for office in 2024.
On Tuesday evening, just before the Wyoming retreat was set to begin, Musk tweeted that he was a supporter of “the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party.”
