Yikes! See the Worst Celebrity Halloween Costumes Through the Years

Katy Perry, Bethenny Frankel and more stars have learned the hard way that not every Halloween costume can be a winner — see some of the worst outfits over the years

Just plain scary! Katy Perry, Bethenny Frankel, Hilary Duff and more celebrities have fallen victim to bad costumes over the years, proving that even stars can miss the mark when it comes to Halloween.

Whether it’s wearing an offensive outfit or a creepy get-up, sometimes celebrities are better off playing it safe rather than trying to be showstoppers. Perry’s flaming hot Cheeto look from 2014 is a perfect — albeit unfortunate — example.

While the “California Gurls” singer is known for going all out both on stage and for Halloween, her Cheeto costume looked sad in shape and wasn’t easily recognizable to some. That mishap, however, didn’t stop the “Harleys in Hawaii” musician from thinking outside the box for future looks.

“For Halloween, I definitely have a very topical costume,” Perry told Vogue in October 2021. “I like to hit the summary of the year on the head and it’s very goofy as I go. There’s two ways to go, either a little bit slutty or a little bit weird, and I always tend to lean weird.”

Duff, for her part, found herself in hot water in 2016 when she attended a Halloween bash dressed as a pilgrim. Her then-boyfriend, Jason Walsh, came as a Native American, wearing a full headdress and face makeup that didn’t bode well with some of the Lizzie McGuire alum’s fans.

“I am SO sorry to people I offended with my costume. It was not properly thought through,” Duff tweeted at the time, apologizing for her controversial choice.

Walsh also addressed his ensemble via Instagram. “I meant no disrespect. I only have admiration for the indigenous people of America,” he wrote that year. “In hindsight I would not have made that decision. I apologize to anyone I may have offended.”

In October 2021, Bethenny Frankel raised eyebrows when she opted to dress up as a police officer alongside her daughter, Bryn, one year after the major Black Lives Matter protests and the ongoing conversations about police tactics.

“This crew will keep your neighborhood safe 🚨 👮‍♀️ 🐶,” she captioned a series of photos via Instagram, including one posing with a nightstick in front of a cop car while carrying one her dogs, which was dressed as a criminal.

One user replied, “No ma’am. No ma’am.” Another fan accused the Real Housewives of New York City alum of being tone deaf for her wardrobe pick.
