Kim Kardashian’s gift of late dad’s hologram draws more backlash

Kim Kardashian was touched by her 40th birthday present but not everyone felt the same about the "surprise from heaven."

Kim Kardashian was touched by her 40th birthday present from Kanye West — a hologram of her late father Robert — but not everyone felt the same about the “surprise from heaven.”

“230k people died but hey, enjoy this hologram of my dead dad because we’re so rich we can recreate our dead family members,” comedian and former “Daily Show” writer Travon Free tweeted, “Enjoy your 2-D photos of nana you broke bitch!”

Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, noted, “In the near future, the super-rich will be completely surrounded by holograms and androids in the form of their deceased loved ones and even former partners. They’ll live in a fantasy land where they think they’ve conquered death and separation.”

For my birthday, Kanye got me the most thoughtful gift of a lifetime. A special surprise from heaven. A hologram of my dad. ✨🤍 It is so lifelike and we watched it over and over, filled with lots so tears and emotion. I can’t even describe what this meant to me and my sisters, my brother, my mom and closest friends to experience together. Thank you so much Kanye for this memory that will last a lifetime ✨

Someone replied to Heer, “I think this is literally the background plot for Westworld, isn’t it?” referring to the dystopian 1973 film that got an HBO reboot in 2016.

Another person pointed out how tone-deaf the gift seemed, in light of the backlash Kim got for flying her inner circle to a private island in Tahiti for her 40th birthday bash amid the global COVID-19 pandemic.

“kim heard your feedback about boasting of her wealthy private island vacation during a pandemic where your loved ones are dying and said ok here is a hologram of my dead loved one that my wealthy husband bought me,” said BuzzFeed’s David Mack.

“next week: ok guys sorry for everything anyway Kylie bought me the cure for cancer.”

The reality TV star posted an Instagram video of the hologram, showing Robert resurrected to deliver a special message for his daughter.

“Happy birthday, Kimberly. Look at you. You’re 40 and all grown up. You’re beautiful, just like when you were a little girl,” he says, clad in a tan suit and white button-down. “I watch over you and your sisters and brother and the kids everyday.”

Robert, among the team of lawyers who got his close pal OJ Simpson acquitted of murder, died in 2003, two months after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

The hologram also refers to West as the “most, most, most, most, most genius man in the world.”

Josh Billinson didn’t let West’s self-aggrandizing shoutout go unnoticed.

“Kanye really made the Robert Kardashian hologram call him ‘the most, most, most, most, most genius man in the whole world,'” Billinson tweeted.

Page Six reported Kim blew $1 million to charter a private jet to get her nearest and dearest to a resort on the exclusive island, known locally as Tetiaroa Atoll. Their luxurious five-day stay included fine dining, spa visits and hikes.
