Demi Lovato is evolving, and she has the ink to prove it.

The “Anyone” singer, 28, appears to be hard at work on new music, posting a photo on Wednesday with the caption, “Dear little me, I’m sorry that it took so long but baby your [sic] free.”

Despite the teaser, fans were even more focused on Lovato’s new neck tattoo than they were on the possible new lyrics; the star showed off a large butterfly design on the left side of her neck while on the set of a secret music video project. Wearing an Alexandre Vauthier floral dress ($1,200) and pink Casadei pumps, the star looked more confident than ever.

She hasn’t explained what the butterfly tattoo means or when she got it, but the insect is likely a reference to how much Lovato’s grown and matured since her 2018 overdose, which she’s been open about in recent months.

In July, Lovato marked her “miracle” two-year anniversary of her overdose and marveled at how far she’s come, especially following her recent engagement to boyfriend Max Ehrich. “I can genuinely say I feel free of my demons,” she wrote at the time. “Each and every one. I never thought this feeling was possible.”

While Lovato has tons of tattoos on her arms and other parts of her body, she also has her fair share of neck tattoos already. In December, the songstress had the word “survivor” inked on the right side of her neck near her collarbone and, in February, tapped tattoo artist Alessandro Capozzi to create an “incredibly meaningful” design on her back, which represents “a fallen angel being lifted by 3, pure, angelic doves (the Holy trinity) as her inner light is being guided by a higher consciousness, and the disintegration of her dark wings was representing the darkness I was shedding,” according to Lovato.

Her many other self-love-themed tats similarly acknowledge her mental health and addiction struggles.
