MTV paid tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman during the 2020 Video Music Awards on Sunday night, two days after the “Black Panther” star succumbed to his four-year battle with colon cancer.
“Before we get into the music tonight, we need to dedicate the time to talk about the devastating loss of Chadwick Boseman, an actor whose talent is a true inspiration to all the fans he touched and everyone he encountered. We dedicate tonight’s show to a man whose spirit touched so many. He is a true spirit, not just onscreen but in everything he did. His impact lives forever,” host Keke Palmer said before the show began.
The network later echoed the same sentiment, tweeting, “RIP Chadwick Boseman. Tonight’s #VMAs is dedicated to him.”
On Friday, reps for Boseman confirmed his death, revealing the actor had been battling cancer behind the scenes. Boseman was diagosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2016, which later progressed to stage 4.
He was 43 years old.
In the wake of Boseman’s death, countless tributes have poured in from Hollywood, including two touching messages MTV posted to its Instagram over the weekend.

In a second post, MTV highlighted the moment Boseman was named Best Hero at the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards for his turn as T’Challa in “Black Panther.” While accepting the golden popcorn, Boseman honored real-life hero, James Shaw Jr., who disarmed a gunman at a Tennessee Waffle House earlier that year.

“So, this is gonna live at your house,” Boseman told Shaw. “Thank you, brother.”
Boseman — also known for his performances as legends Jackie Robinson in “42,” Thurgood Marshall in “Marshall,” and James Brown in “Get on Up” — died at his home, where he was surrounded by loved ones, including wife Taylor Simone Ledward.
Keke Palmer is the host of this year’s VMAs, which is taking place in New York amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
