New Yorkers rejoiced over the reopening weekend at many city museums and other cultural institutions, pumping their fists triumphantly as they entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art Saturday for the first time since the coronavirus closed its doors on March 13.
Masked Met visitors had their temperatures checked before browsing museum collections behind mandatory facemasks.
The museum had been opened to members on Friday, but Saturday was the first day the general public could enjoy the exhibits.
It was the first weekend after Gov. Andrew Cuomo decreed New York’s cultural spaces could reopen at 25 percent capacity.
Dining in is still prohibited in the city, and most of the reopened cultural spaces require reservations for staggered entrance times.
Gyms and bowling alleys are also allowed to reopen.
