Jason Derulo, who boasts over 30 million followers on TikTok, does not think President Trump’s proposal to ban the app will pass.
“I don’t believe that will be the case, honestly, but that would be a sad day for a lot of people, including myself,” he exclusively told Page Six in a new interview. “I just have a lot of fun on the app, so it would be pretty sad, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
On Thursday, Trump, 74, signed an executive order to ban transactions starting in 45 days between US companies and TikTok’s Chinese parent company — unless TikTok finds an American company to purchase its US business.
Trump said the US “must take aggressive action against the owners of TikTok to protect our national security,” and the app may have been used for disinformation campaigns benefitting the Chinese Communist Party.
“I think a lot of people tap our phones, so you’re damned if you do, you’re damned if you don’t,” Derulo, 30, said in response, adding that he’s noticed he will get ad notifications for topics he talks about randomly.
“I’ll say, ‘Man, I should really shave,’ and it’ll be like, ‘Here’s our new shaver,’” the “Savage Love” singer joked.
In the meantime, the entertainer is enjoying rolling out a lot of fun content on the app, including a video that went viral of him chipping his tooth for the corncob drill challenge.
When asked whether he actually broke his tooth completing the challenge, he teased, “The world may never know. I got my smile, so I’m lit right now.”
However, Derulo isn’t spending his quarantine just creating viral videos. He has also released three new songs, “Coño,” “Take You Dancing” and “Don’t Cry for Me,” and shared that he is shopping around for a new record deal.
“I’m in the process of finding the right family,” he said. “I was signed to a label for 12 years [Warner Music] and now I’m a free agent, and I’ve been working with different labels on these different songs. I don’t want to do the independent thing, though it’s working really well right now. I still want to have that team of people to help further everything.”
Despite not being signed to a team, Derulo is still putting on a show for his fans.
On Friday night at 8:30 p.m. ET, the “Swalla” singer will take part in Anheuser-Busch’s virtual International Beer Day Festival, which will stream on Anheuser-Busch YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
The music festival begins at 6 p.m. ET and will also feature appearances from Priyanka Chopra, Prince Royce and Action Bronson.
“We just all need content and things to do,” Derulo said. “What better way than to do a virtual concert, so I gathered all my guys together and I think we created a show that will be really cool to watch.”
The “Wiggle” singer said his set will include a mix of old and new songs, and will feature “tons of dancing,” too.
“It’s very high energy, and it’s at the house,” he said. “We still created stages everywhere, so it’ll be pretty fun to watch.”
