In the ultimate meeting of highbrow and lowbrow, the esteemed Tribeca Film Festival’s parent company has paired with Walmart to offer pandemic-weary Americans a series of free drive-in movies in the corporation’s parking lots nationwide. Drew Barrymore will host virtually.

Between Aug. 14 and Oct. 21, the Walmart Drive-in experience will bring movie nights to 160 Walmart Supercenters across 26 states. Of the 320 showings, 94 will be in Texas.

The movie lineup is subject to change, but includes nine flicks: recent blockbusters “Black Panther,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and “Wonder Woman,” early 2000s hits “Friday Night Lights” and “Spy Kids” and vintage classics “Space Jam,” “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Ghostbusters” and “The Wizard of Oz.” Short films will be screened before each night’s movie.

A variety of celebrities will make in-person and digital appearances at the screenings, according to a press release. Barrymore, 45, will virtually host all events and make an in-person appearance at one. Jennifer Garner, LeBron James, Chrissy Metz and Peter Berg will also attend select evenings — although if they’ll merely be on-screen or there in person is being teased as a surprise.

All films will start at 7:30 p.m., with a strict no late entry policy. Tickets are free but must be requested in advance and will not be available at the gate. Alcohol is not allowed, nor is leaving your vehicle.

“Drive-ins have been a signature program for Tribeca since we started the Tribeca Film Festival 19 years ago after 9/11,” said Jane Rosenthal, CEO and co-founder of Tribeca Enterprises and Tribeca Film Festival

There are no screenings set for New York or Connecticut, and only two dates in New Jersey. However, New Yorkers have plenty of local drive-in fun to attend.

Astoria’s Bel Aire Diner has been hosting drive-in entertainment from movies to live comedy since May. The Gowanus Canal has become a venue for paddle-in screenings and a boat-in theater is set to dock in NYC later this summer.
