Jennifer Lawrence created a public Twitter account this week to help raise awareness for racial injustice.
Despite just now launching her verified account, the Oscar winner is not new to the platform. In 2018, she told InStyle that she had a private account because she preferred to be a “voyeur” and just observe.
“I watch, I don’t speak,” Lawrence, 29, said at the time. “There is always so much backlash. So many people are listening and paying attention, and they have so many opinions about absolutely everything. I really don’t want to welcome that unless it’s absolutely necessary.”
She continued, “I don’t want to put myself out there for no reason. Unless I’m promoting something or something really burns my onions, you won’t hear from me.”
Two years later, the “Silver Linings Playbook” star has found a reason to use her voice and speak out.
Lawrence’s first tweet on Tuesday was used to share a RepresentUs PSA starring Omar Epps that highlighted how “nearly 1 in 4 Black men in America will be locked up at some point in their life.”
“In this short video, @omarepps & @desmondmeade explain how corruption has broken our criminal justice system—& what we can do to fix it,” the tweet also said.
The “Red Sparrow” star then released a lengthy statement on Wednesday to speak out about Breonna Taylor’s case.
“For three months since her murder Breonna Taylor’s family, the people of Louisville, Americans across the country, and many around the world have called out for justice. And yet, those calls have gone unanswered,” she wrote in part. “We must not allow the erasure of Black women to continue in America. As many activists and leaders have been imploring for years: #SayHer Name.”
As of Thursday morning, Lawrence’s Twitter account has more than 5,000 followers.
