Gayle King is afraid for her son.

“My son is 33 years old, and I’m worried about him,” she said on Thursday’s episode of “The Talk @Home.”

King, 65, explained that she begs William Bumpus Jr. not to take his dog for long walks in the Santa Monica, Calif., area amid ongoing protests in response to the death of George Floyd while in police custody, adding that “everything is so volatile.”

“I’m worried about him walking his frickin’ dog,” she said. “I worry for him being a black man, period.”

She explained that as things have escalated, so have her fears.

“Now everybody is so amped up about everything. I do, I worry a lot about his safety,” she said. “Welcome to being black in America. This is not new.”

She continued, “This is another thing that I think is so interesting, how white people are processing this and black people are processing it. You know, because it is black and white, but it should be a human issue, this is about humanity.”

King shares her son with ex-husband William Bumpus. They are also parents to 32-year-old daughter Kirby.

The TV host hopes that America will see real change following the outrage over Floyd’s death. “Maybe, just maybe, this will be the change … maybe this will be the one,” she said. “If something doesn’t change after this, shame on us.”
