CBS announced Friday that a musical will, indeed, fill the June 7 time slot vacated by the 2020 Tony Awards this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. It just won’t be live — or new.
Instead, the network will air a singalong version of the 1978 film “Grease,” starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John at 8:30 p.m. ET.
The Tonys, which honor the best of Broadway at Radio City Music Hall, remain indefinitely postponed.
Since Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a ban on gatherings over 500 people on March 12, all Broadways shows have remained dark — the longest hiatus in the history of the Great White Way. Performances are currently canceled through Sept. 6, but insiders say that the pause is likely to continue through at least winter.
Most of the plays and musicals of the spring theater season that would’ve been in contention never even reached opening night, such as “Plaza Suite,” “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “The Lehman Trilogy”. Shows that did open include “Moulin Rouge!”, “Jagged Little Pill”, “West Side Story” and “The Inheritance”.
As for the future of the 74th annual ceremony, reports have said that everything in on the table, from an outright cancellation to a combined 2020-2021 award show to a non-competition celebration of Broadway, to drum up interest once it’s safe and legal to return to the theater.
So, still no Tony. For now, we get Danny.
