“Southern Charm” star Kathryn Dennis has been dropped as brand ambassador for a South Carolina-based clothing store after being accused of sending racist messages to activist Mika Gadsden earlier this week.
“As a minority-owned business, Gwynn’s and our employees are dedicated to serving all members of our community. Indisputably Kathryn Dennis’ comments and statements to Tamika Gadsen [sic] do not reflect the values of the Gwynn’s brand. Her previous affiliation as a brand ambassador was periodic and on a contract basis. We stand in unity with people of color and with causes that fight to end injustices,” Gwynn’s of Mount Pleasant wrote on Instagram Wednesday.
The 28-year-old Bravo star got into a heated exchange via Twitter DMs with Gadsden on Monday over a planned “Trump Boat Parade” to be thrown by local businesses in Charleston, South Carolina.
Dennis’ dispute over whether supporting President Trump made her a racist quickly degenerated into a racially insensitive rant. According to Buzzfeed, Dennis sent 28 messages to Gadsden, calling her a “psycho,” in addition to sending the monkey emoji.
Dennis soon admitted that “using a monkey emoji … was offensive.”
“From the bottom of my heart I sincerely apologize to anyone and everyone I hurt. Although the context was not my intention, there are no ‘if ands or buts’ that excuse me … I did not give it thought, and it was and is wrong. I know I am not that person. I know and will do better,” she wrote.
Gadsden, for her part, wasn’t buying Dennis’ mea culpa. “Apology not accepted,” she tweeted, in response to the reality star’s public retraction.
