Here’s further proof that Cher is strong enough to outlive — and out-fabulous — us all.
In March, the 73-year-old diva of all divas was forced to cut short her “Here We Go Again” tour due to the coronavirus pandemic. But not only did she survive unscathed — she kept working during her home quarantine by recording her first-ever Spanish single, a cover of ABBA’s classic “Chiquitita.”
And what exactly have you done in isolation?
The single — which will be released Friday, in both Spanish and English — benefits UNICEF. And the icon herself made a $1 million donation to the charity through her own foundation, the CherCares Pandemic Resource and Response Initiative.
Of course, Cher has shown her love for ABBA before, having appeared in the movie “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” and released an album of ABBA covers, titled “Dancing Queen,” in 2018.
“I knew I wanted to do something,” Cher told Billboard in an interview published Monday. “I actually started learning and rehearsing the song when I was in England last year, but didn’t record it then. It was difficult!”
But now the song has even more meaning for the Kennedy Center honoree, given that she somehow escaped the COVID-19 crisis.
“This disease is like a shark. It’s an eating machine,” she said. “I knew more than most Americans because I had friends in Italy who were doing live shows when it was there, and everybody had to just get out.
“We were lucky we didn’t all come down with it because my dancers and I were literally 2 inches away from each other, breathing right into each other’s mouths onstage.”
You also can catch the “Chiquitita” music video premiere during UNICEF’s COVID-19 “virtual special” that will stream at 8 p.m. Saturday on the organization’s website and YouTube channel. The hour-long program will include appearances by Pink, Chloe x Halle, Sheryl Crow, Téa Leoni, Matthew Morrison, Millie Bobby Brown, Morgan Freeman, Lucy Liu, Sting, Salma Hayek Pinault, Jordin Sparks, Rod Stewart, Rob Thomas, Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart and more.
