Donald Faison and Zach Braff paid tribute to their late “Scrubs” co-star Sam Lloyd, who died on Thursday at age 56 after a long battle with cancer.

“Hey guys, It’s Zach and Donald here. We have a bit of bad news,” Faison began their podcast, “Fake Doctors, Real Friends” on Tuesday, before telling their fans about Lloyd’s passing. “For me this is heartbreaking. Sam was a very, very amazing person.”

Braff, 45, added that Lloyd, who played lawyer Ted Buckland on the sitcom, was “the nicest man I think I’ve ever met. He was so sweet and kind and just loved to laugh. He would come on and play that super nerdy lawyer character, but we would all just crack up so hard with Sam.”

Braff told listeners that he’d actually seen Lloyd in the last six months.

“He looked great, he looked amazing,” Braff said, noting that he didn’t bring up his cancer battle because he wasn’t sure if he wanted to talk about it. “He just looked fully recovered.”

The pair praised Lloyd’s comedic talent as well as his musical talent and his surprising skills on the basketball court. Faison, 45, recalled how he would try to recruit Lloyd to be on his team that played on Sundays, but was shot down because Lloyd refused to miss a New England Patriots game.

“He was an assassin on the court,” Faison remembered.

Lloyd was diagnosed with lung cancer that metastasized to his brain, liver, spine, and jaw in January 2019, right around the same time his wife Vanessa had given birth to their son Weston.

Faison and Braff ended their tribute by encouraging people to donate to his wife and son’s GoFundMe page, which has amassed over $180,000.

“We love you Sam,” Braff concluded. “I know for sure that he made a difference in a lot of people’s lives because we all need to laugh and Sam made us laugh.”
