Sam Lloyd, best known for playing the iconic hangdog lawyer Ted Buckland on “Scrubs,” has died, TMZ is reporting. He was 56.
Lloyd was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in January 2019 after suffering headaches in the wake of the birth of his first child, Weston, with wife Vanessa. Doctors determined that the tumor was too far intertwined to operate and that it had metastasized from his lungs and spread to his liver, spine and jaw.
A GoFundMe set up for him helped raise nearly $160K towards the actor’s medical expenses as of this writing, with notable contributions coming in from both “Scrubs” creator Bill Lawrence and star Zach Braff.
“Lloyd made me crack up and break character every single time we did a scene together,” Braff wrote on Twitter Friday evening. “He could not have been a kinder man.”
The nephew of “Back to the Future” and “Taxi” star Christopher Lloyd, Sam notched appearances on other network mainstays aside from “Scrubs,” like “The West Wing,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” and “Desperate Housewives.” He also reprised the role of “Ted” on Lawrence’s other popular comedy, “Cougar Town.”
Lloyd was also an accomplished singer and musician: His a cappella group “The Blanks” made several appearances on “Scrubs” and he played bass in a Beatles tribute group called The Butties. At the time of his diagnosis, a musical he had been working on for a decade, “With Pam & Gil,” had been accepted into a “prestigious theatre accelerator program,” according to the GoFundme. One of its songs was titled “Make Music Along The Way.”
