Justin Timberlake gives ‘It’s Gonna Be May’ meme a coronavirus update

This perennial meme has gotten a coronavirus twist.

*NSYNC’s 2000 hit single “It’s Gonna Be Me” reliably goes viral every May 1, when photos of the former boy band are shared with the easily misheard chorus: “It’s Gonna Be May.”

But this year is different. On April 30, Justin Timberlake offered up a version of the internet joke which is hopefully only relevant for May 2020 — an “It’s Gonna Be May” meme of his mug where he’s wearing a face mask.

“Spring Summer 2020. Thanks for this, Internet,” Timberlake, 39, tweeted to the tune of more than 64,000 likes as of Friday morning.

One fan beat Timberlake to the punch, commenting on the song’s official music video a full month ago with: “Everyone: When is the quarantine going to end? JT: It’s gonna be May.” The response has racked up over 3,800 likes.

*NSYNC member Lance Bass, 40, says May 1 has become something of an annual event for the former bandmates.

“We tease each other daily on our group text, but today is definitely one of our favorite holidays, for sure, because, I mean, look at all these memes! There’s so many,” Bass said on “Good Morning America,” in 2019. “I’m so sorry, Justin. He gets so much crap every single May.”

Timberlake isn’t reaching fans in quarantine just by trolling his former diction — he also voices the character Branch in Universal Pictures’ “Trolls World Tour,” which was released directly to video-streaming services in response to the ongoing global pandemic. The choice to not wait for theaters to reopen, and allow kids to enjoy the film now in quarantine, has proved a financial windfall: The movie had amassed nearly $100 million in digital rentals by the end of April.

Timberlake also recently went on SiriusXM’s “The Morning Mash Up” to talk about parenting his son, Silas, with wife Jessica Biel while in isolation. The “SexyBack” singer remarked that the experience has been intensely challenging and that “24-hour parenting is just not human.”
