David Byrne has revealed how Jerry Seinfeld re-wrote a joke in Byrne’s hit Broadway show “American Utopia” after seeing it.
The Talking Heads legend, 67, appeared on Amy Schumer’s podcast, “3 Girls, 1 Keith,” where Schumer admitted she had been to see Byrne’s show so many times that the backstage crew came to greet her. After taking Seinfeld, 65, with her, Byrne revealed the star then helped him change the last joke of the show.
He said: “One of the nights you came, [Amy], you brought Jerry Seinfeld and later we had some drinks after and he said, ‘That one joke. You gotta fix it.”
Schumer, 38, then said, “It was amazing, it was just flipping the order.” She also admitted that, “Jerry gave me the last joke of my last special, which was my closer, so there’s no shame.”
Byrne added: “This guy knows how this machine works … I’ve never met him before, and he’s given me a note. But it turned out to be a good note.
“I would say, “The firemen don’t want you to dance in the aisles, because the dancers in the aisles have an unfair advantage in the event of a fire.” And Jerry said, ‘Uh-uh. The joke is ‘unfair advantage.’ Always put the joke at the end, ’cause otherwise you’re jumping on top of your own joke.”
